Thanks for your interest in joining our research group. We are actively seeking students with a strong background in computer vision, machine learning, or artificial intelligence.

Lab Information

Research Areas

We’re mainly working in the following research areas. We’re also open to exploring other topics in computer vision and machine learning.

• Continual Learning and Few-shot Learning: learning deep neural networks efficiently on limited labeled data and continual data streams. Related papers: [Sun et al., 2019], [Liu et al., 2020], [Liu et al., 2021], [Liu et al., 2023], [Fischer et al., 2024], etc.
• 3D Generative Models: developing 3D-aware generative models to better understand the underlying 3D structures in 2D images. Related papers: [Ma et al., 2023], [Fischer et al., 2024], [Ma et al., 2024], etc.
• Medical Image Analysis: enhancing AI models’ reliability and generalizability when applied to medical images such as CT scans. Related paper: [Zhang et al., 2023].

Computing Resources

We have access to extensive computing resources through Illinois Computes and the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA). For example, our group can utilize the following clusters:

• NCSA DeltaAI: 608 NVIDIA H100 GPUs
• NCSA Delta: 100 quad A40 GPU nodes, 100 quad A100 GPU nodes, etc.

Positions

PhD Students

We have multiple Ph.D. openings for Fall 2026 in the following programs:

• PhD in Information Sciences, School of Information Sciences
• PhD in Computer Science, Siebel School of Computing and Data Science
• PhD in Informatics, Illinois Informatics

If you are interested, please directly apply to the above programs through the Graduate College application system and mention my name in your application. Usually, the application deadlines will be in December, and we will organize official interviews in January and February.

Master’s Students

We also welcome applications to the Master of Science in Computer Science (MSCS) program. This is a research-oriented degree that requires both coursework and a thesis. The application process follows the same standards and requirements as for PhD applicants.

Independent Studies (IS389/589, CS397/597, and ECE397/597)

We always welcome undergraduate and master’s students in the School of Information Sciences, the Siebel School of Computing and Data Science, and the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois to apply for independent studies under my supervision.
